Buying and selling stock of individual companies are not the only investment options available. For example, a widely popular investment option that may carry less risk than investing in stocks alone is a mutual fund, explains Rick Gonsalves.

What is a mutual fund?

A mutual fund is a type of investment vehicle that allows an individual to pool his or her money with other investors in order to purchase a variety of stocks, bonds, and other securities. By pooling money together, this gives an individual the opportunity to have ownership in companies with a high price per share of stock. There are as many types of mutual funds as there are investment objectives. However, one thing many mutual funds have in common is that they are made up of many different types of investments (also called a portfolio). This can make investing in mutual funds an attractive option to new investor who wants to make money in the market but does not know where to begin.
